Book review The soul at work - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog

Book review The soul at work - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog Complexity science is appearing more and more often in business literature (and just about everywhere else). This book with the subtitle unleashing the power of complexity science for business success shows a better way to manage organizations than the old command-and-control way, and describes some of the tools needed to get there. It helped put me on to the joy at work project. The book is divided into three main parts. Theres an introduction to complexity science, a number of case stories from companies that successfully applied it, and lastly a compendium of recommendations for the leader who wants to try it. All the information in the book is solid, well written and easily readable. My favourite part is the case stories. These stories are rousing descriptions of how different organizations transformed told by the people involved. These organizations were transformed from a classical command-and-control structure to something else. The organizations are not identical afterwards, far from it, but introducing elements from complexity science seems to have resulted in many of the same benefits. People trust each other. They are allowed to make mistakes. They have more fun. And they consistently outperform themselves from before the change. All the stories also tell you the same thing about the transformation process: Its scary! Dont expect the transformation of your organization to be painless. Dont expect it to please everybody. Dont expect results quickly. In fact, you can be sure of the opposite. Which is why you need to believe that what your doing is right. You need to believe that command-and-control is not the best way to manage an organization, and that it is certainly not the best way to engage people souls in their work. My favourite story is of Dick Knowles who became the CEO of one of DuPonts chemical plants in West Virginia in 1987. When he took over, he was by habit a command-and-control leader You had to be rough You often shouted at people, used bad language, and sometimes demeaned those below you. The plant in West Virginia was one of DuPonts worst performing, both in terms of profits and in terms of injury rates and pollution. The story shows how Knowles transformed himself and the plant by adopting a totally different style of leadership and spreading this throughout the plant. The results: Injury rates went down by 95%. Environmental emissions went down 87%. Plant up-time increased from 65% to 95%. Productivity increased by 45%. Earnings per employee tripled. Also, the plant went from being feared by the local community (because of the risk of pollution or industrial accidents), to being a good, trusted neighbour. The only thing that I feel is missing from this book, is an increased focus on the organizational layers below top management. All the case stories are of the CEO introducing new principles and letting them spread through the organization. Lets say youre not top management, but you still want to introduce some of these changes. What tools will you use? How will you spread these values UP the hierarchy? These are some of the issues we will adress in project Joy at Work. Thanks for visiting my blog. If you're new here, you should check out this list of my 10 most popular articles. 7 Signs Your Companys CEO is Toxic

7 Signs Your Companys CEO is Toxic Just like a toxic boss or toxic colleagues, a toxic CEO can seriously shake up the workplace in a damaging way. The CEO is, of course, the top face of leadership at the company and, if he or she is bedrngnis handling their role responsibly, they could spoil the company culture for everyone. So, how do you know if your CEO is just having an off few days (or weeks), or if theyre an actually toxic person? Here are seven red flags the person you work for falls within the latter camp.1. Your CEO doesnt engage with the company.A toxic CEO doesnt spend time establishing rapport with anyone at the company they may act too big for anyone else. But gaining trust and establishing open lines of communication are key for a company to run smoothly. And if no one feels like they know the CEO at all (even otherbei leaders), this can be concerning.2. Your CEO doesnt respect anyones privacy. If theres an issue that the CEO needs to discuss with someone at the company, and they choose to do so publicly instead of individually, this can be demoralizing and humiliating. Its (in, arguably, most cases) unfair of a CEO to talk about private matters in public spaces.3. Your CEO doesnt give credit where its due.Work well done deserves credit. But when a company has a success, and the CEO takes all the credit for that success without acknowledging all the moving parts and key players, its can feel disrespectful. This is a surefire sign of a toxic CEO who could bury the motivation of their staff.4. Your CEO doesnt lead by example. The fact of the matter is that a true leader leads. And if your CEO is exhibiting poor behaviors at the top level, it suggests to the rest of the company that such behaviors will be tolerated. A CEO who isnt going to spoil the company culture will, instead, lead by example.5. Your CEO makes rash decisions without consulting any other leaders.Your CEO makes split-second decisions on behalf of the company that, frankly, blindside m uch of the staff. They dont ever consult other leaders in the company or think through big moves in order to make confident, informed decisions. And, sometimes, these decisions can backfire.6. Your CEO doesnt comment on bad behavior in the workplace. If something happens in your workplace, such as sexual harassment or assault, and its become a public matter, your CEO should acknowledge that it has happened and that it is not acceptable. If your CEO stays silent on issues affecting those beneath them, they are essentially condoning these workplace issues just as much as if they would be if they were to applaud such behavior.7. Your CEO isnt receptive to change.Your CEO isnt receptive to change and, instead, is willing to risk sinking the ship for the sake of tradition. A CEO who understands business understands that times are changing, and theyll be ready to do what it takes to stay afloat for the betterment of everyone involved.--AnnaMarie Houlis is a feminist, a freelance journalist and an adventure aficionado with an affinity for impulsive solo travel. Internships To Pay or Not to Pay - Spark Hire

Internships To Pay or Not to Pay - Spark HireAccording to Ross Perlin, the author of a book titled Intern Nation How to Earn Nothing and Learn Little in the Brave New Economy, there are about 1.5 million internships in the U.S. each year, nearly half unpaid. Unpaid internships and paid internships are clearly a popular staple in the job market these days. As you know, internships are no new trend. They have been around for quite some time as a way for young job seekers and workers to get their foot in the door and gain some in-depth learning on the industry of their interest.Unpaid internships arent new either, but as of late there has been much controversy on whether or not unpaid internships are moral. Since the recession, many employers thought it clever to lay off some of their employees and replace them with unpaid students or young workers under the guise of an internship. This is clearly wrong, but unpaid internships can totenstill provide a benefit for students. So as an emp loyer or hiring manager, should you offer a paid internship or an unpaid internship? It is evident when you search through job boards and university job posts that unpaid internships are still very popular. Its true that unpaid internships can be extremely beneficial, especially if interns are earning college credit for the work they are doing. Many universities, like DePaul University, actually require their students to complete an internship before they graduate. The internship must be approved by the professor and they must earn college credit for it. The internship and the work is closely watched, and the intern/student ends up gaining a good amount of knowledge and experience in their desired field. Back in 1938 the Fair Labor Standards Act was passed that placed a 6-point test that unpaid internships must pass in order to be lawful and fair.If your company is thinking of offering unpaid internships to students or young workers, you must be sure the position covers all six of th ese points1. The internship must be similar to training that would be given in an educational environment2. The internship must be for the benefit of the intern3. The intern does not displace regular employees4. The employer derives no immediate advantage from the intern5. The intern is not entitled to a job at the end of the internship and6. The intern understands that he or she is not entitled to wages. If the unpaid internship you offer, or are thinking to offer, does not comply with these points, then it would be best to map out a payment plan for the interns you intend to bring on. Without doing so could turn your offered unpaid internship into a costly lawsuit. If it is not in your companys budget to pay interns on a regular basis, thats fine but you must be sure the interns are learning something of value from their internship. If its clear that your interns wont continue to learn and earn valuable experience working in just one department the whole time, then consider rotatin g interns between departments or offices. With this, the interns are gaining comprehensive knowledge in the industry they are interested in and get to experience the workings of different departments within an organization or company. Furthermore, if the unpaid internship route is the way you want to go still, then it is highly recommended by the Department of Labor that your internships have set durations. Meaning there is a clear start and end date. Without this, it can be easy for companies to take advantage of their interns. If you know very well that the internship you are offering will not be greatly beneficial to those that take it in terms of experience and building a skill set, then it is best you pay your interns. Ultimately, the decision is up to your company and whoever is in charge of creating these internship programs. However, those involved should know full well that interns and internships that are abused or used improperly may come at a huge cost to you and your comp any in the end.If you offer internships, are they paid or unpaid?
