Mistakes You Make When You Dont Love Your Job - The Muse
Mistakes You Make When You Dont Love Your Job - The MuseMistakes You Make When You Dont Love Your Job Youd be lying to yourself if you said theres never been a day you walked into work and thought to yourself, I dont love this job, but its fine for now. You might also think that if you dont completely hate your gig, you actually kind of like it. Sure, theres nothing wrong with being content with what you do for a living, but if youre feeling sort of meh about your current job, youre probably making some mistakes that might be costing you a position you love down the line. For example, here are a few of the most common errors people who are sort-of-kind-of OK with their jobs make. 1. You Turn Down Networking Opportunities Too QuicklySome of you might be skittish about rocking the boat at your current company. And there might be a few of you who just cant find the motivation to meet new people outside of working hours. But in either case, its surprisingly common for folks who are OK wi th their current roles to turn down opportunities. Theres no point, you might say, Why would I go out of my way to meet someone for coffee when Im not looking? However, there are two things you need to remember. First, no matter what anyone tells you, networking meetings dont have to go on and on forever. But more importantly, you might be turning down a chance to hear about a more exciting job at a company youve always wanted to join. No guarantees, of course. But if you keep turning down your contacts invitations for coffee, youre only stunting your own career growth.2. Youre Not Looking Around at What Else Might be Out ThereIm going to let you in on what my life was like a few years ago when I felt that my job was not great, but fine for that period of my life. (Spoiler Its not very exciting). Id go to work, get through my to-do list, buchen dinner from the cafe around the corner from my apartment, and then go to bed at a not-so-reasonable hour. That was it. And for a while, I th ought I could stay satisfied sticking to that dull routine for a few years. The only problem with that thinking was that it would mean Id be sticking to that monotonous routine for a few years. And even though I liked the people I worked with, that was an incredibly sobering thought. But, for many individuals who are OK with their current job, thats an easy (and dangerous) trap to fall into. Im not suggesting that you throw yourself into an intense job search this second, but if youre not keeping tabs on what else might be available, you might spend way too much time feeling just meh about how your career is going. READY TO GO FROM A MEH JOB TO ONE YOU ACTUALLY LOVE?The only good answer to that is, Yes, of courseCheck out 10,000+ openings now 3. Youre Getting Down on Yourself Way Too EasilyOK, truth time. How often do you thank your lucky stars for the fact that youre at least somewhat satisfied with your job because you dont think you could do much better? I know the feeling all to o well and believe me when I say I also understand how much it sucks. Why risk a decent salary and a routine youre somewhat comfortable with, especially if it means applying for (and possibly getting rejected for) different jobs, right? While its understandable to feel this way, you have much more to lose by not putting yourself out there for your dream job than you do by staying silent and trudging on in your current gig.Its scary, full of uncertainty, and could lead to what feels like a never-ending search. But even if your efforts dont pay immediate dividends, you are not just good enough. If youre not completely happy with what youre doing, you owe it to yourself to see if a more exciting company agrees with me about what you bring to the table. Hey, I get it. If life at work is comfortable enough for you, why would you tempt fate by starting to look elsewhere? And speaking of the job search, when has that ever been fun for anyone, right? However, as someone whos taken a few ris ks and finally landed at a place I love, I know that its ultimately worth the risk. Whether its because you lack the motivation or confidence in yourself to find something better, trust me- if I can do it, anyone can- and should.

8 Signs Youre the Toxic Co-Worker in the Office
8 Signs Youre the Toxic Co-Worker in the Office8 Signs Youre the Toxic Co-Worker in the Office Toxicity can transform an otherwise pleasant work environment into one in which productivity suffers, morale erodes and employees are looking for the first available lifeboat. Toxic bosses and co-workers can make or break an organization. We know who they are , as they typically make themselves easy to spot. But what if your company is staffed by a slate of seemingly awesome people? You might have lucked out, or perhaps your worst fears are finally being realized What if youre the toxic co-worker?Usually, youll have some sort of idea that youre disliked. But self-awareness is often lacking for many people. And in any case, stepping back and taking stock of your behavior at your workplace wouldnt hurt. It might help you identify some areas in which you could improve. That might mean working on your leadership or social skills, which are becoming more and more valuable in toda ys job market. So how can you tell whether you are the toxic co-worker? Here are eight telltale signs.Do you always seem to get left out when lunch invitations are handed out? Or perhaps there seems to be some sort of gravitational phenomenon in the break room where everybody else finds a chair away from you. Take that as a hint. People might be avoiding you, and thats a sign. Of course, this sort of social ostracizing probably hasnt gone unnoticed. So if you find yourself in a lonely and frustrating position, examine your behavior. Work on building relationships with your workmates. Are you absolutely killing it at work, hitting all of your marks and leaving the rest of the rubes in the dust? Sure, thats a good thing, but you might need to figure out why nobody else can keep up. Perhaps your success is coming at the expense of everyone else. Are you taking credit for other peoples work, swiping ideas, etc.? Thats a sure way to cement yourself as the arbeitszimmer pariah.Instead o f focusing on your own success all the time, work on lifting up those around you, building camaraderie and trying different strategies. This is a great way to work on your leadership skills and actually show the higher-ups that you can lead. If youre universally loathed, youre going to ansturm into the ceiling eventually. You wont be promotedinto a leadership position if no one respects you.If your life at work is starting to resemble that of a teenagers, you have some problems on your hands. Theres always going to be some level of drama. But if you truly want to be successful, youll ignore it. If you find yourself consistently at the center of some office spat , withdraw. Try to figure out what youre doing thats getting you into that position, and work on it.Leapfrogging off all of that office drama, if you find youre somehow always the victim, well, youre probably the problem. Stop playing the victim, and start solving problems. Change your frame of mind, and others will begin to respect you more. Leaders dont get promoted for blaming all of their issues on others or on things outside of their control. They take the reins. Genghis Khan wouldnt have played the victim card, and neither should you.Have you ever voiced an opinion or idea in a work meeting that brings the conversation to a crashing halt? That probably means you havent been paying attention to your colleagues. You might feel like your idea was the best for the group. But if its met with confused looks and awkward pauses you likely havent been listening. Instead of handing down one seemingly great pronouncement, collaborate more with your colleagues to give and take ideas . Show you value their opinions, and theyll begin to value yours. The office shouldnt be all work and no play. Whod want to be in that environment every day? Taking a few minutes to share some personal news or show a funny cat video is one thing. But constantly hanging on someones desk rambling on about everything under the sun i s another. If co-workers tend to run in the opposite direction to avoid being cornered by you and your chatty ways , youre probably bringing some level of toxicity to their lives. Save your chit-chat for the lunch hour or after work.Is it a given that youll be 15 minutes late every day? Do people not even expect a project from you by its due date, or do they avoid assigning you important tasks altogether? If your colleagues have given up on you doing things right, youre probably the toxic co-worker. You being unreliable frustrates everyone, even if it doesnt directly affect them. Its a matter of fairness. They got to work on time, so why should you get a pass? Hold yourself to the office standards to avoid being seen in this negative light. You might think its great that two of your colleagues pitched in at the last minute to help you get your work done. But outside of extraordinary circumstances, thats not normal. If everyone else can accomplish their workloads by themselves and o nly you receive help, youre probably seen as slow or untrustworthy. If your workload is unreasonable , you should present the issue to your boss and have potential solutions ready. But if people have to help you because your work is sloppy or sluggish, its up to you to shape up. Its not fair for your co-workers to have to keep an eye on you. This article was originally published on The Cheat Sheet . It is reprinted with permission.

How to impress in a job interview (12 crucial things to do)
How to impress in a job bewerbungsgesprch (12 crucial things to do)How to impress in a job einstellungsgesprch (12 crucial things to do)You finally landed an interview for the job youve been coveting congrats Now its time to buck up and blow your upcoming interview out of the water. Easier said than done though, especially if youre pretty new to interviews in general or its been a while since your last job hunt.No matter what the situation, youre likely wondering how can I stand out in the crowd and impress my interviewer(s)?Heres howBe authentic.Although preparation is important, the job is really only the right job for you if its right forbothof you the interviewee (you) and the employer (the company). So being professional but still yourself is the best way to save wasted time and disappointment in your job search because if they hire you it should be based on who you really are, and if they dont move forward with you, it should be because it wasnt an honest match.Dress the par t.Whether youre interviewing to flip burgers or run a country, show up dressed to impress. While a suit is no longer the only way to dress well for interviews, it is still a good go-to in most situations. To be totally sure, ask the company before the day of your interview what their dress code is or do a little bit of research on your own aboutappropriate interview attire for different situations. At the end of the day, though, Its always, always better to overdress than underdress.Use first names. There is no sweeter sound than your own name.Studies showthat even patients in a persistent vegetative state react to the sound of their own name thats how powerful this tactic is. Influence the hiring managerand leaving a lasting impression by remembering and using the names of each team member.Bring a copy of your resume.Having a resume to reference makes it easy to share the highlights from your career, ensuresthey align well what you shared on your resume, and demonstrates preparednes s in case an interviewer doesnt have a copy.Allow the pause. The most impressive candidates control their desire to fill every space with impulsive answers and hesitant ums and uhs. When asked a question, take a moment to think through your response or identify an appropriate anecdote and then begin speaking. The pause is fine and it even shows your ability to be calm and composed.Show interest in the company.Interview the team thats interviewing you by asking questions that allow them to talk about what theyre most proud ofI saw that you have greatemployer reviews. Were you aware of these and why do you think theyre so positive? What wasthe organizations greatest accomplishment last year? What makes people stay at your company?Talk about what you can do for them.Instead of sharing your skills and knowledge in a totally general sense, share how you think your skills and knowledge applies to the role youre applying for and in the organization as a whole. Reference the organizations miss ion and goals, if youre able to find them online prior the interview, and help them envision you as a team member of the company. This all amounts to tailoring your background to the role and it is at the root of what interviewers want to hear, because it tells them that youre not just looking for any job, buttheirjob.Be fully prepared to answer any interview question that comes your way. No, theres no way to know for sure what exact questions an interviewer might throw at you, but there are definitelya bunch of common interview questionsyou could use as guide. Being fully preparednot only helps you avoid getting stumped by a question in the interview, but it also helps show that you take this opportunity seriously, that you care enough to put effort into proper preparation, and also to allow the interview to progress more smoothly and enjoyably for everyone involved.Arrive 8 minutes early.Candidates who arrive too early can put pressure on the companys team members to abandon their other obligations (OR just let you sit there awkwardly by yourself), and candidates who arrive late might be perceived as unprepared or disrespectful. Arrive in the parking lot or neighborhood as early as you need to, but walk in the front door just 5-8 minutes prior to your scheduled interview time.Never agree to start immediately.Employers want to know that you care about your current employers operations despite leaving the company. If youre currently employed, always mention the notice you have to give and your cognizance of your employers needs when asked how soon you can start.Be positive, courteous and confident. You might do everything else right in the interview, but if you come across as very negative and /or lacking in good manners or confidence, itll make any interviewer second guess whether youve gotthe right personality traits theyre looking for in new hiresthat will make you pleasant to work with.Follow up.Sending a follow-up note or email can keep you fresh on the te ams mind and reinforce the fact that youre a courteous and thoughtful person, all great things to do no matter where you are in the hiring process but especially if you were interviewed early in the selection process. Plan that follow-up phone call or email as early as the day of the interview or the morning after. This article was originally published on Kununu.

Whats the Difference Between a CV and Resume
Whats the Difference Between a CV and ResumeWhats the Difference Between a CV and ResumeIn 2017, the words CV (Curriculum Vitae) and resume are often used interchangeably, which is confusing for many. What are the similarities between a CV and resume? What makes them different? When should you use a CV or resume? These questions will be answered, and your confusion between the two will finally be lifted. What are the similarities between a CV and resume? CVs and resumes are both an overview of your accomplishments, experience and skills and are used to get you an interview. From a marketing perspective, they are both advertisements for you and your work. CVs and resumes are great promotion tools, and show your best work and why youre different from candidates applying for the same role. Also like an advertisement, they both include a call-to-action, which is your anthroponym and contact information. The differences between a CV and resumeThe main difference between a CV and a resume i s that a CV focuses on your educational history and a resume focuses on achievements in your professional career.A CV is a comprehensive document that details accomplishments, awards, honors and publications with an academic focus. A CV usually begins with and emphasizes your education history. Its length is usually two or more pages and includes a complete list of awards and publications. Nothing is cut out for the sake of space. CVs are also considered a living document and are updated often. An example of a modern-day CV is your LinkedIn profile. Although it usually emphasizes your work experience over your academic experience, it is updated often and because there isnt any concern for space, it includes a full list of your experiences.A resume is usually 1-2 pages highlights your work experience and is tailored to the role youre applying for. If a CV is the movie of your life, a resume is your highlight reel or trailer. Resumes usually lead with work experience, and education is usually placed last. Skills and experience are usually trimmed down to show only the ones that are relevant to the potential role. When should you use a resume or CV?As mentioned earlier, the words CV and resume often used interchangeably, but they are used in different situations. CVs are usually used to apply for teaching and research roles, postdoctoral positions, fellowships and grants. Resumes are usually used to apply for almost any job not in academics. CVs are often used to apply for jobs outside of the United States. But if youre living in the U.S., more often than not when applying for a job most employers want a resume. If youre unsure, it never hurts to ask.

Make peace with one thing to get more out of life
Make peace with one thing to get mora out of lifeMake peace with one thing to get more out of lifeEverybody wants to matter. To make a difference. To stand out, be noticed, and admired (maybe even envied) by others. It starts when were children. Hey Mom, look at me we shout. Dad, watch me we say, anxious for ur parents to pay attention, applaud and show us that we matter. What we dont understand is that our parents already love us. Theres no need to perform.Illustrations by John P. WeissAdolescence solidifies our insecurities. Raging hormones, awkwardness, acne and the specter of dating all coalesce like famished velociraptors, feasting on the remnants of our self-confidence.Why do we do it?Somehow, wounds and all, we make it to adulthood. But the challenges dont end there. Karen has a hotter husband than you do. Joey has a better job and car than you do. The Andersons take way better vacations than you do. Just look at their Facebook posts.Social media breifs out the worst in our ins ecurities. We become fixated on how many likes, claps and thumbs up we get. We welcheste inordinate amounts of time primping, arranging and posing for our latest Instagram pictures. Why do we do it? Why do we waste hours seeking approval or attention from (mostly) total strangers? Strangers who spend only seconds on your page before moving on to other digital distractions.A self-esteem drugWe do it because we want to matter. We want to feel important, valued, noticed, talked about and relevant. In a skewed sort of way, social media has become a self-esteem drug.We spend hours collecting, re-shooting, designing and crafting the best photos, videos and content to show off to the world. Then we wait, eyes blinking from the screen glow, until the likes and claps validate our egos.Consider this quote from a post at TheOddesseyonline.comWe edit away zits. We edit away fat. We edit away wrinkles. But we also edit away so much more. We edit away emotions. We edit away criticisms. We edit awa y insecurities. We edit away the lows of the rollercoaster of our lives. We edit away the side of ourselves that we fear others might see.An unfolding storyThe fact of the matter is that you are a lengthy novel. An unfolding story, containing millions of words, events, joys, sorrows, hopes, dreams, andlife. Its your quirks and idiosyncrasies that make you interesting, not how much you might look like Brad Pitt or sing like Adele.Your story cant be captured in carefully curated Instagram photos. Your Facebook feed isnt the real you. Its the you whos searching for attention, or approval, or a boost to your self-esteem.Heres an interesting question to ponderWhat would you do with your time if you had no audience?Grounded in the moments of our livesBack before the Internet, people used to join service clubs, go bowling, play sports, visit after Church, enjoy sit-down dinners, play cards and board games. All of these activities afforded the opportunity to converse. To look one another in t he eye, talk, and enjoy the interaction. Share in each others humanity. The conversations were face to face. We could see the subtle, physical mannerisms. Clues to how our loved ones and friends were really doing. Something you cant do as easily in a text or email. In short, we were more grounded in the moments of our lives. Laughing, patting each other on the back, taking walks, building tree houses. We werent wasting hours on social media, trolling for attention and validation. We were out there in the world, living.Theyre tools and entertainment devicesNow, before you label me a romanticist for days gone by, let me concede. I love the Internet. I love the availability of information, art, great writing, entertainment and even the sense of community that social media (to some extent) provides. Thanks to the Internet, its easier than ever to connect with like-minded people. Whether youre into ball room dancing, fine art, birding or spelunking, you can find fellow aficionados online.Lo nely people, and those in remote locations, can connect with others online. With the Internet, people can start businesses and bypass gatekeepers to share their talents.Clearly, the Internet and social media have their place. Theyre tools and entertainment portals. Kind of like books.Books. The original entertainment portalThe trick is not to rely on the Internet and social media for your self-esteem. There are millions of people online. There will always be someone better looking, more talented, more successful or with more likes. If you want to get more out of life, theres one thing you need to make peace with. What is it?Digital irrelevancy. They live in a fishbowlDont confuse personal irrelevancy with digital irrelevancy. None of us are irrelevant. We might feel like that sometimes, but we are hugely relevant to any number of people. Our families, partners, children, and close friends. leid to mention the random people we help in our lives.Getting comfortable with digital irreleva ncy means accepting that its okay not being an online celebrity or superstar. Further, it might actually be better.Self.com published an article on reasons its okay youre not famous. For example, famous people have to spend a lot of time managing their image. Everything they do is under a microscope. They live in a fishbowl.People judge their every move. Their looks, behavior, generosity, politics, and more. Not to mention, celebrities are always under pressure to produce that next, great thing. Be it a new movie, music CD or cutting edge performance. It must be exhausting. The rest of us are free from such burdens. We can experiment and try new things. We dont have to be on all the time, or worry about who our real friends are.In the Self.com article, a psychology professor named W. Keith Campbell notedDoing things for joy or love or connectedness with other people is what makes you fulfilled. The article went on to sayIf youre amazing at something and want to share it, great. But you ll get a lot more out of it if you do it because you want to learn and improve - not sell tickets to a show called You.When youre not a celebrity, you get to be you. You dont have to worry about hate mail or how long your shelf life will last.Think how hard it must be for all those 1980s TV stars that are now on late-night TV, hawking miracle creams and reverse mortgages. How demoralizing. No one is immuneMost of us have fantasized at one time or another about fame. Children wish they were superheroes. Teens imagine themselves as music or movie stars. Some adults dream of high, political office. When we come to realize that such aspirations are often unlikely, we turn to social media to make our mark. No one is immune. After all, its very satisfying to receive likes and claps from strangers who enjoy our blog, music, artwork, etc.The problem is that people are capricious. Every day, Im blessed to have new subscribers join my email list. But every time I publish a new email newsletter , a number of readers un-subscribe.Theres generally no rhyme or reason to it. Some readers rave about a post, and others hate it.When I first started blogging, I was fixated on growing my audience. I dreamt of creating courses, books, products and making a lot of money. Such things are certainly possible, if you create great content and connect with people. The problem was, I came to realize that I was living a lie. I was aping other successful bloggers, and not staying true to my personal passions. Namely, landscape painting, cartooning and writing. I didnt want to become a blogging business. I just wanted to share my artistry with others.Somehow, I got sidetracked. I wanted more likes. I wanted more subscribers. I didnt stop to ask an important questionTo what end?Its a good question to ask yourself. To what end are you pursuing all this online stuff? Lets face it, the Internet is crowded. Not everyone will become an online celebrity. But even for the ones who do, I wonder if its a ll its cracked up to be?Hopelessly tetheredFame and success can become their own kind of imprisonment. Imagine being a twenty-something, video game junkie who creates a successful YouTube channel and gains fame.Soon, video game companies start advertising with you. Gamers love your style and before long your YouTube channel has turned into a full-blown business. Youre making serious money and have celebrity status. Then, a few years click by and you start getting sick of video game stuff. In fact, you always wanted to explore music, but you cant easily do that now. You have a staff. People depend on you. You found digital relevancy, but now youre hopelessly branded and tethered. You cant be the You you are now, because youre intertwined with the digital personality you became.C. S. Lewis lectured about the dangers of pursuing the in crowd. In most every organization, there is always an inner ring of people who are in the know. They may not be the ones at the top, either. The problem w ith trying to join the in crowd is that, once youre inside, its not all you thought it would be. In time, you might even bore of this group. In the long run, its far more satisfying to make the work your focus and priority. Make the craft your passion, and stop worrying about fame, celebrity and being part of the in crowd.I wrote an article that explores this in more detailBe the Sound Craftsmen and Free Your Creative Soul.Free your creative soulI finally asked myself, To what end? To what end am I trying to become a successful blogger? At first, it was about financial success. Living the laptop lifestyle and all that.Funny how our egos can derail going after the things we really want.Eventually, I regained some emotional maturity. I took C. S. Lewiss advice. I decided to focus on my craft, and not fame or fortune. Painting, cartooning and writing were the things that brought me happiness. The more I focused on improving my skills, the less I worried about social media and blogging f ame.Drawing cartoons is more fun than social media addictionWhen we free our creative soul, we realize that its okay to embrace digital irrelevancy. We stop slavishly posting and competing with everyone else. We stop tweaking our websites and switching email services. We learn to hone in on the work. The passion. For me, its that blank page or canvas. Its the creative possibilities. And the best part is, the more you hone your craft, the more everything else will take care of itself.Get comfortable with digital irrelevancy. Get off the social media treadmill and figure out what you really love doing. Then set about learning your craft.Put in the time, effort and study. The cream usually rises to the top, and before long, others will take note of your work. Not everyone will follow you, and thats okay. You dont want fly by night subscribers and followers. You want diehards, who love and get what you are doing.Creating authentic work that feeds your soul is all you need to do. We all benefit from the immense value that older Australians add to our workplaces and our economy, not just in terms of skills and work experience, but also life experience, says Swan. For boomers wanting to remain in the workforce, the package will provide a much needed incentive. The money will be used to help workers remain in their current place of employment as well as transition into new workplaces. The package will act in addition to the boost made to the Aged Pension last year. The establishment of a Consultative Forum on Mature Age Participation is also in the works to advise the government on further ways to benefit mature age workers. Dont let boredom get the better of you If the thought of spending the rest of your days sitting on your porch and eating early bird dinners scares you half to death, then perhaps you are not quite ready to call it quits. Some view the retirement age as a deadline rather than a guideline, which can lead to premature retirement. With retirement age set to rise from 65 to 67 and life expectancy set at 79 for men and 84 for women, some retirees are heading back to work after finding the boredom of retirement overwhelming. Keeping a casual or part-time job after retiring can help you keep your sanity as well as a comfortable lifestyle. Marguerite Griffith and her husband Michael retired from their jobs, as a secretary and the CEO of the Real Estate Institute of Western Australia respectively, only to find retirement was not quite their cup of tea. I like working Im not a home person, I dont do merry little projects at home, says Marguerite, who now works three days a week at Murdoch University. Similarly, her husband Michael is now a full-time TESOL teacher and a part-time celebrant, after retiring five year s ago at the age of 65. I left the Institute just before turning 60. I went mad with doing nothing for about five minutes and then decided to become a celebrant, says Michael. Working as a celebrant means a lot of time planning and leading weddings and funerals, and this combined with his full-time work at a TESOL teaching company means that Michael is busier than ever, but this has proven not to be an issue Oh no, on the contrary I love it. Its a rich mans life With the strain of the economic downturn, todays ageing population is not equipped with adequate superannuation to fund their retirement. So whether youre doing it for yourself or for the country, staying employed has never looked better. A 2008 report by the Investment and Financial Services Association (IFSA) revealed that superannuation savings were almost $700 billion short of what is needed to fund a dignified and healthy retirement, equating to over $70 000 per person. This coupled with the recent financial crisis m eans that retiring is no easy feat. Back in 1996 David MacDonald retired from his career in engineering after finishing up a contract in the Philippines. Finding there was not much opportunity in the engineering field in Australia, he and his wife bought a farm in country Victoria. He soon returned to the workforce to bring in some income as a pilot (road escort), leading wide-load trucks over long distances, all over the country. Farming is a highly capitalised industry and on 50 acres you dont yield much income, says MacDonald. I picked up some pilot work, which required me to get my pilot certification as well as knowledge on all the traffic and road rules and regulations of each state. Although he has now retired from pilot work, MacDonald still maintains his farm, while keeping busy as a member of the Rotary club and the Secretary of the Rural Fire Brigade. Im still messing about on the farm. Ive got some cattle and I cut bales of hay, in-between feeding dogs and chooks, ch asing snakes and fixing fences thats retirement says MacDonald. I think its important that anybody who retires should have a number of interests. This way you always have something to aim for and look forward to. While youre fit and reasonably healthy, continuing in your employment, if you can, is a good thing. Study says pregnancy is the equivalent of running a 40-week marathon
Study says pregnancy is the equivalent of running a 40-week marathonStudy says pregnancy is the equivalent of running a 40-week marathonIf Ironman races or marathons havent tested your physical core enough, try pregnancy.Carrying a baby to term was essentially like running a 40-week marathon, according to shocking new research that likened the amount of energy used as the same as top athletes.Researchers, which published the findings in Science Advances, looked at human endurance in some of the worlds toughest and longest endurance events. Data was collected from Race Across The USA, a 120-day, a 3,000-mile race that covers nearly a marathon a day for six days per week. Other events like triathlons and the Tour de France were included. When analyzing the data from the events, researchers looked into metabolic rates for participants in the events. For reference, the highest metabolic rate any human can handle is 2.5 times their resting rate.Pregnant women operate at 2.2 times their res ting metabolic rate daily, however, that sustains for far longer than any marathon runner as a muster term usually lasts for a duration of 270 days.Every mother who has gone through a pregnancy has experienced that effort themselves, Duke University professor Herman Pontzer toldTodays Parent. Pregnancy is the longest-duration, highest-energy-expenditure thing that humans can do. Mothers probably arent surprised by this. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

6 ways to influence without authority
6 ways to influence without authority6 ways to influence without authorityI am in the difficult situation of being unofficial project lead, responsible for team performance to schedule and budget. How can I influence and motivate the team to get the job done, when I do elend have a job title that commands their respect?Leadership textbooks make a point of advising up-and-coming leaders leid to accept responsibility for a business outcome without first negotiating a job title and hierarchical authority. In other words, you should always strive to lead with authority. This is great advice in principle, but in the real world youll find organizational structures that are in a constant state of flux and management structures that are highly matrixed, not to mention limited opportunities for promotions. There are times when an emerging leader needs to roll up their sleeves, engage the team, influence, and get the job done.At a company womens leadership event, Dr. Cecilia Kimberlin, former V ice President, Quality and Regulatory Affairs with Abbott, made a point of saying, There is a myth that the higher you go in the organization and the more positional authority you gain that you just have to say do it and people get it done. I hate to bust your bubbleIn this type of environment, influencing without authority is one of the most valuable skills you can learn today. As another senior-level woman in a manufacturing organization once explained, In my company, influencing skills are the single most important success factor after knowing your job.So while positional influence is something to aspire to, until you have it, remember that there are many other useful forms of influence that you could be taking greater advantage of.Your 6 Sources of Influence1. Positional influence The authority that comes inherent in a job title and role.Positional influence is perhaps the most overrated of all forms of influence, as people spend a lot of their careers waiting for it when they c ould be influencing in other, more immediate ways. For example2. Expertise influence The influence that comes with your background, experience, qualifications and career accomplishments.Nora Denzel is a member of the board of directors for Ericsson, Saba and Outerwall. When she spoke to senior technical leaders at a womens conference, she reminded them that, Its not what you know and its not who you know. Its who knows what you know.Who knows what you know? Are your colleagues and management aware of your expertise? If not- dont be the best kept secret in your organization Find appropriate and effective ways to promote your accomplishments, in order to maximize your expertise influence.3. Resources influence Having the ability to attract and deploy the resources you require to get your job done. When budgets and headcount are tight, it is important to demonstrate that any company resources allocated to you are invested well. And dont make the mistake of turning down additional resour ces that could help you perform your job. If you can take an additional resource and use it to deliver a greater return on that investment, youre not doing your company any favors by being frugal.Negotiate for the resources you need, use them well, and you will be entrusted to manage even greater resources in future.4. Informational influence Having a finger on the pulse of what is going on in the organization.Seek out information about changes before they become officially known, such as new projects, opportunities, re-orgs, resource allocations, budgets, and long-range plans. Having a heads up on this information helps you make better business decisions, more rapidly.Over time, others will come to rely on you for your decision-making ability. When that happens, youll be utilizing your informational influence.5. Direct influence Being firm, fair, and professional when someones behavior is out of line.Heres where leadership and parenting have a lot in common. A caring parent will st ep in when a child puts them self or others in danger. There will be times as a leader when you need to do the same, using your direct influence to take that person aside and have a tough love conversation. The best leaders do this in a way that is firm, fair, direct, and confidential. They also take the time to share their vision for that individual and their future potential, and in doing so, act more like a mentor than a boss.Leaders who do this well gain a great deal of respect from their people. By using your direct influence well, you can make a big difference in another persons career.6. Relationships influence The influence that grows as you build great working relationships with those you rely on to get your job done, and everyone else that your role touches.Dr. Sophie Vandebroek, Chief Technology Officer with Xerox, said, Its not enough to have a bright idea. I have seen too many projects lumineszenzdiode by great, passionate people fail because they tried to be a lone infl uencer. You have to get the right people in the boat with you. You have to engage the entire human fabric. When you take time to build great relationships across the human fabric of your organization, you are less likely to need to resort to cajoling or persuading others to get things done. Instead of being the sole driver of an idea you can achieve a lot more by collaborating with people who know you and trust you.So dont try to be a lone influencer. By fully using the power of relationships and of all of your Sources of Influence, you can gain credibility, get buy-in for ideas, and make a larger impact in your company, with or without the positional authority of a job title. This article was originally posted on BeLeaderly.com.

Military Enlisted Promotions Facts
Military Enlisted Promotions FactsMilitary Enlisted Promotions FactsEach branch of the U.S. armed forces has its own promotion system for its enlisted members. There are nine enlisted pay grades in the military, from E-1 to E-9. The rank or rating varies by branch of service, but the pay grade level is the saatkorn. So a private first class in the Army is the seestreitkraft Corps equivalent of a lance corporal, both E-3. For the Army, Marines, and Air Force, promotions up to the grade of E-4 are pretty much automatic (assuming one doesnt get into trouble), based upon time-in-service and/or time-in-grade.The same is true for the Navy and Coast Guard up to the grade of E-3. The Army revamped its promotion requirements in 2015, to allow points toward promotion for combat zone deployments, and implements some mandatory education requirements. And soldiers who are not up to the Armys physical fitness standards now may not be considered promotable. Promotions Within LowerPay Grades The basic requirements for the automatic promotions vary slightly across the different branches. In the Army and Air Force, promotion to E-2 status requiressix months of active duty and approval by a commander are needed in the Navy its, nine months of active duty and commander approval. In the Marine Corps, new enlisted members are promoted to E-2 after six months of active duty, and in the Coast Guard, anyone otherwise eligiblewho has completed boot camp is E-2 eligible. For promotion to E-3, the Army requires 12 months of active duty service, four months as an E-2 and a commanders recommendation. The Air Force requires 10 months as an E-2 and a commanders approval, the Navy requires nine months as an E-2,demonstrated military and professional qualifications, and commanders approval. To achieve E-3 in the Marine Corps nine months of active duty are required, as well as eight months as an E-2. And the Coast Guard requires six months as an E-2,demonstration of military andprofessional qualifications, and a commanders approval in order to be promoted to E-3. The next step up is E-4, and this is the last level of pay grade promotion thats considered virtually automatic based on time served. In the Army, 24 months active duty, sixmonths as an E-3, and a commanders recommendation are required in the Air Force,36 months active duty, with 20 months as an E-3, or 28 months as an E-3, whichever comes first, are acceptable. The Marine Corps requires24 months active duty, and12 months as an E-3 for an E-4 promotion. The Navy and Coast Guard vary from the other branches when it comes to E-4 promotions. Both are based on vacancies within the members given career field, with an average of about 36 months of active duty. Promotions to E-5 Pay Grades As the Navy and Coast Guard do at pay grade E-4, the other branches become more selective at the E-5 level. Promotions to the grades of E-5and above are competitive in the Army, Air Force and Marine Corps, since there are alway smore people eligible for promotion then there are available positions (Congress sets the number of enlisted personnel who can serve in each grade). Promotion rates change each year, based upon several factors (including reenlistment rates) which determine how many slots in each rank will be available. The services each have their own methods to for selecting candidates for promotion, based on points for specific achievements, to promotion boards, to combinations of both. Air Force Promotion Exceptions With the exception of the Air Force, which gives the same promotion percentages within each rank to each Air Force job, promotions (in the other branches) can depend greatly upon the current manning-level of your specific job. For example, if youre an E-5 in a Navy rating (job) that is overmanned in E-6, you may be unable to get promoted, no matter how well you do on the tests or other promotion factors. On the other hand, if youre in a rating that is undermanned in your next rank , the opposite may be true. In the Air Force, its a different story. The Air Force gives the same promotion percentages to all their jobs (exception, some extremely critical jobs get an extra five percent promotion advantage). In other words, if the Air Force decides that their overall promotion rate to E-5 is going to be 25 percent, then 25 percent of the eligible E-4s in each Air Force Specialty will be promoted. This system has a major disadvantage, however- it can easily result in one job being overmanned in personnel of a certain rank, and other jobs (or the same job) being undermanned in certain ranks. The Air Force handles this by identifying those in overmanned ranks/jobs and asking them to re-train. If they dont get enough volunteers, the Air Force will mandatorily re-train enough folks to balance out the rank structure within their jobs.
